Mechanical leather packings have an advantage not possessed by
other packings. The hide from which leather packings are made is a natural product. The
individual fibres of leather are interwoven in a manner that is unmatched by any other
packing material. This natural fabric is not only pliable and tough, but also highly
resistant to abrasion and wear.
Some of the advantages of leather packings include:
- A low coefficient of friction
- Low in cost
- Suitable for a wide range of pressures
- Will not score or abrade
- Permit greater metal clearances
